1910s/1920s Silk Embroidered Dress As-Is
1910s/1920s Silk Embroidered Dress As-Is
* Crepe de chine silk fabric
* Heavy white embroidery throughout all draped sashes and along sleeves
* Keyhole design at both sleeves
* Inner bodice with hook and eyes - two large hooks at waist that state “Governor Pat 11-24-14” so it’s possible this is a rough date as to when the dress was made.
* Decorative tassels at front neckline
* Snaps along left side and at top left shoulder
* Sash that’s stitched along waist and ties along left side

➾ CONDITION - Fair to Good. Please read the condition carefully, as this dress is hitting the shop as-is. There is light staining along both front and back of bodice. It is light, but still present. Scattered small holes/pinholes throughout. A couple small mends made to the left shoulder. Some of the embroidery is fraying/shedding (the embroidery throughout this dress is considerably heavy), as well as coming undone in some places, specifically to right sleeve. The elastic straps on the inner bodice are completely shot, meaning they’d need to be replaced, but they are not crucial to the overall wearable structure of the garment. All of the hook and eyes are exhibiting various levels of rust. Most are in working order, but there are a couple that are difficult to secure. And the rust isn’t visible to anyone when worn. One of the large hooks at waist has snapped off, but the other is still in working. The top snap along inner bodice has a mend around it - I am concerned about the fragility of the silk fabric here and thinking it’s likely it will tear again if unsnapped without care. One mended patch on silk fabric along inner bodice. Two large patches were clearly hand-stitched to both shoulders along the inside of the dress, I’m assuming to help reinforce or support the weight of the garment, as it is relatively heavy. Having stated all of this, this dress presents gorgeously and you’d never know nearly half of it’s issues unless really inspecting it. I do believe this dress can be worn with proper caution and care. I personally wouldn’t party hard in it, but would serve beautifully in a photo shoot or out to lunch. A skilled seamstress could also do wonders with this, I’m certain. It is still rare and incredibly beautiful. I would like to note that this dress came to me as-is - I have worn this dress once and the mends made held up quite nicely, but I didn’t to do much to exaggerate or stress the fabric.
